Germany’s Five Youth Teams Begin 2026: From U17 Exit to U21 Redemption

A recent international window saw five German youth teams in action during the first break of the year, alongside the senior squad’s narrow wins over Switzerland and Ghana as preparation for the World Cup continues.

In the U17 category, Germany failed to qualify for both the European Championship and the World Cup, finishing third in their group after a win over North Macedonia and a 1-1 draw with Slovenia, with France advancing ahead of them.

Germany U19 advanced to the European Championship, finishing top of their group after earning a point against Sweden and narrow wins against Greece and Austria, securing qualification for the tournament in Wales. The U19 side has a history of success in this competition, including a title in 2019 and another run to the semi-finals last year.

U20’s Elite League campaign ended with close wins over the Czech Republic and Poland, as Max Moerstedt and Noah Darvich helped secure a comeback victory, while Ruben Müller’s late strike completed the win in Poland. Germany finished second in the group, with Portugal topping the standings.

In the U18 category, the squad participated in the preliminary qualification for the 2027 U19 Euros in Czechia, finishing the round with four points but advancing to the next stage.

Germany U21 opened with a 3-2 defeat to Greece but later defeated Greece 2-0 in Athens to move to the top of their qualification group, aided by a 3-0 win over Northern Ireland earlier in the window. The group standings will continue to evolve when FIFA’s extended international break resumes next season.
