In the second half, Köln pressed for an equalizer as Ragnar Ache and Marius Bülter created chances, but Matanović then took the ball early in the game to convert a rebound after his header was blocked, restoring Freiburg’s lead. Freiburg were awarded a dubious penalty after a handball from Alessio Castro-Montes on Matanović’s shot, but his tame attempt was saved by Marvin Schwäbe as Köln’s captain helped keep his side in contention.
Köln will host Wolfsburg to open matchday 20, while Freiburg, now seventh in the standings, face two challenging away games in a four-day span against LOSC Lille and VfB Stuttgart.
