Klopp Signals Plans for Germany’s Under-21 League

A plan to introduce an under-21 league in Germany from the 2026/27 season is under consideration by the country’s top football governing body, with the aim of bridging the gap between youth and senior professional football.

The proposal was developed by an expert group that includes Jürgen Klopp, Max Eberl, Markus Krösche, Marc Lenz, Andreas Rettig and Sami Khedira.

Klopp first brought the idea into public discussion in an interview last summer, sparking widespread debate about potential changes to the development pathway for young players.

During a media round in Leipzig earlier this month, Klopp indicated that the idea has continued to grow, noting positive feedback and the need for change, and that steps are being explored to help young players in a decisive age group play more often.

The governing body has not issued an official comment, and clubs are expected to vote on whether to introduce the U21 league at a general meeting in March.
