Mainz's recent 4-0 defeat to Freiburg has prompted serious questions regarding the future of head coach Bo Henriksen.
After a commendable sixth-place finish in the 2024/25 season, Mainz has had a troubled start to the current campaign, currently sitting at the bottom of the Bundesliga table after 12 matches.
The team's winless streak in the league has now reached eight games following the loss to Freiburg, raising significant concerns about Henriksen's position. Reports indicate that U23 coach Benjamin Hoffmann is being considered as a potential short-term replacement.
Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, “Of course, it’s clear to us that after a game like this, and given our current position in the table, the situation is extremely unsatisfactory, and we will be scrutinizing ourselves in every possible area,” during an interview with DAZN.
Bungert emphasized that discussions regarding Henriksen's future would be conducted privately, stating, “we won’t announce anything now or debate it live on television.”
The team is scheduled to play Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday, but it remains uncertain whether Henriksen will retain his role by then.
