Matthias Sammer has advised Borussia Dortmund to establish a clear deadline for Nico Schlotterbeck to make a decision regarding his future with the club.
Although Borussia Dortmund is optimistic about extending Schlotterbeck's contract, which currently runs until 2027, the club’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, has indicated that there is no plan to impose a deadline for the centre-back's decision.
In contrast, Sammer, a former player for BVB and now an advisor to the club, contends that setting a deadline would be a pragmatic approach. He emphasized the importance of understanding the progress of negotiations, suggesting that it might be beneficial to allow more time for deliberation.
Sammer stated, “I have always looked at it from a sporting perspective. That’s why, in the past, I have often told the club: I know you want harmony and want to give him more time. You can do that, but I wouldn’t. Sometimes I would set deadlines.”
Schlotterbeck has been a member of Borussia Dortmund since 2022.
