Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has responded to criticism from Liverpool boss Arne Slot regarding a tackle by defender Micky van de Ven that resulted in Alexander Isak suffering a broken leg.
In a match on Saturday, Van de Ven's sliding tackle on Isak led to the latter being injured and subsequently undergoing surgery for a fibula fracture. Isak, a significant signing for Liverpool, is expected to be sidelined for at least two months.
Slot characterized Van de Ven's challenge as “reckless” during a media conference on Tuesday, stating that such a tackle poses a serious risk of injury to players.
In contrast, Frank defended Van de Ven, arguing that the defender acted in a natural manner to prevent a goal. He emphasized that the tackle was not intended to harm and that it was a typical action for a defender in a competitive situation.
Frank expressed confidence in Van de Ven's playing style, dismissing the notion that the challenge was reckless. He mentioned that both players involved have since resolved the matter amicably.
The defeat against Liverpool has intensified pressure on Frank, who has faced challenges since taking over as manager following the departure of Ange Postecoglou. Despite Tottenham's current position in 14th place in the Premier League, Frank is optimistic about improving the team's performance.
He acknowledged the unique challenges of managing a club that competes in both the Champions League and the Premier League, stating his commitment to driving the team forward.
