Lothar Matthäus Prefers Upamecano Over Schlotterbeck as Starter

Lothar Matthäus has expressed his preference for Dayot Upamecano over Nico Schlotterbeck, should Bayern Munich need to make a decision regarding their central defense.

Bayern Munich is currently in discussions with Upamecano about a contract extension that would extend beyond 2026. If an agreement cannot be reached, Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund is reportedly being considered as a potential replacement.

Matthäus, a German football legend, believes that replacing Upamecano with Schlotterbeck would weaken Bayern's defense. He noted that both players are top central defenders who have shown significant development at their respective clubs. However, he highlighted Upamecano's speed and consistency as advantages over Schlotterbeck, who has made some recent errors.

In his column for Sky Germany, Matthäus stated, “If it came down to one position, I would rather start Upamecano than Schlotterbeck.” He acknowledged that while Schlotterbeck could potentially fit into Bayern's squad, he currently favors the pairing of Upamecano and Jonathan Tah as very stable.

Matthäus also pointed out a concern regarding Bayern's defense, mentioning that while the team is solid in open play, they have conceded several goals from set pieces, indicating a minor issue in that area.
