Liverpool Faces Unexpected Challenge; United Suffer Setback as Title Contenders Impress - Premier League Insights

Aston Villa faces a challenging match against Chelsea on Saturday, following their emergence in the Premier League title race alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.

Arsenal, currently at the top of the league, will host Brighton, while Manchester City, in strong form, travels to Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot is contending with a striker shortage after Alexander Isak suffered a leg fracture, and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is also expected to miss time due to injury.

Ahead of the festive matches, three key talking points have emerged.

ROGER SPEARHEADS VILLA CHARGE

Unai Emery's Aston Villa, currently in third place, is still viewed as an outsider for the Premier League title, despite being only three points behind leaders Arsenal. Their recent 2-1 victory over Manchester United marked their tenth consecutive win across all competitions, a first for the club since 1914.

A significant factor in their success has been the performance of midfielder Morgan Rogers, who has evolved from having no goal involvement in his first seven matches to contributing 11 in his last 15. This season, Rogers has scored seven goals from an expected goals metric of just 2.86.

Despite this, analysts at Opta assign Villa only a five percent chance of claiming the English title for the first time since 1981. The upcoming match against Chelsea offers Villa a chance to prove their critics wrong, with a subsequent match against Arsenal looming.

SLOT’S LIVERPOOL GOALS HEADACHE

In the early season, Arne Slot likely anticipated having both Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak as key attackers. Currently, Salah is participating in the Africa Cup of Nations, and Isak is sidelined for at least two months due to his leg injury sustained against Tottenham.

Slot has managed to stabilize Liverpool after a dismal stretch of six defeats in seven league matches, leading the team to three wins and two draws in their last five games, positioning them in fifth place. However, concerns about scoring remain, especially with the upcoming match against bottom-ranked Wolves.

Isak's injury puts additional pressure on top-scorer Hugo Ekitike, who has scored eight goals in the Premier League, significantly outpacing Salah and Cody Gakpo.

FERNANDES BLOW FOR MAN UNITED

Bruno Fernandes has been a crucial player for Manchester United during difficult times. However, manager Ruben Amorim must now prepare for his absence after Fernandes sustained a hamstring injury in a recent defeat against Aston Villa.

While the extent of the injury is still uncertain, Amorim has confirmed that Fernandes will miss the upcoming match against Newcastle. He has urged the rest of the squad to “step up” in the absence of their “impossible to replace” captain.

Defender Diogo Dalot acknowledged the impact of Fernandes's injury, noting the uncertainty surrounding its severity. This season, Fernandes has contributed five goals and seven assists in the Premier League, while the team also faces the absence of top-scorer Bryan Mbeumo, who is on duty with Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations.
