German World Cup winner Wolfgang Overath has expressed his belief in the extraordinary potential of young footballer Said El Mala.
At just 19 years old, El Mala has secured a position in 1. FC Köln's starting lineup and received his first call-up to Germany's senior national team.
Overath, a legend of both Germany and Köln, has been closely monitoring El Mala's progress and is optimistic about his future, provided he maintains focus. "With the dynamism he carries the ball with, he doesn’t stumble, he cuts inside, takes the shot and scores. If he keeps a level head, he has the potential to become a truly special player," Overath stated.
He also mentioned that both El Mala and Bayern Munich's 17-year-old Lennart Karl could be considered for roles in next year's World Cup, despite their youth. "Hopefully, he can handle all the hype that’s surrounding him right now," Overath added.
Overath reflected on his own experience, noting, "There’s no such thing as too young – I was already in the national team at 19, just like [Franz] Beckenbauer," highlighting the potential for young players to make an impact.
This season, El Mala has demonstrated his skills by scoring six goals and providing three assists in 17 matches for 1. FC Köln.
