Diomande Excels as Côte d'Ivoire Begins AFCON 2025 with Victory

Yan Diomande showcased his impressive form during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as he made a notable tournament debut in Côte d'Ivoire's victory over Mozambique.

The defending champions began their title defense in Group F with a narrow win, where Diomande, playing for RB Leipzig, delivered a solid performance throughout the match. The only goal of the game came from Amad Diallo early in the second half, securing the win for Côte d'Ivoire.

Hoffenheim's 19-year-old forward Bazoumana Touré is anticipated to make his tournament debut when Côte d'Ivoire faces Cameroon, a match between two prominent African football nations, on Sunday.

Cameroon also commenced their campaign with a victory, defeating Gabon in the final match of the opening day of the group stage. Karl Etta Eyong ensured that all twelve matches played so far in the tournament had at least one goal, with his strike requiring a lengthy VAR check.

Gabon made tactical adjustments by introducing former Bundesliga top-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang among other substitutions, but Cameroon managed to maintain their slim lead in a match characterized by end-to-end action. Bayer Leverkusen's rising star Christian Kofane did not see any playing time as an unused substitute for the Indomitable Lions.
