AFCON 2025: Kofane and Touré Lead Dramatic Finish in Group Stage

The group stage of the 35th African Cup of Nations concluded on Wednesday, setting the stage for the Round of 16 matchups. The tournament will observe a two-day break before resuming on Saturday.

In a dramatic turn of events, Cameroon initially believed they had secured the top position in their group, only to see Côte d'Ivoire clinch it with a late victory over Gabon. Christian Kofane, who made his international debut in the second match against Côte d'Ivoire, played a pivotal role for Cameroon in their comeback win against Mozambique, scoring the decisive goal with a powerful strike from outside the box.

Meanwhile, Côte d'Ivoire showcased resilience by coming from behind twice to secure a win against Gabon in injury time. The defending champions featured two notable young talents from the Bundesliga, with Yan Diomande starting all three group matches, while Bazoumana Touré took the opportunity to shine on his tournament debut, scoring a header in the 91st minute to propel Côte d'Ivoire to the top of Group F.

The conclusion of the group stage means that Cameroon will now face South Africa, while Burkina Faso is set to compete against Côte d'Ivoire. Mozambique will face Nigeria in the knockout stage.
