Darmstadt Triumphs in High-Scoring Clash in 2. Bundesliga Showdown

Darmstadt secured a 4-2 victory against Fürth in Saturday night’s Topspiel at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor.

Fraser Hornby played a key role in the win, scoring twice, while Isac Lidberg and Merveille Papela also contributed goals for Darmstadt.

The match began with Darmstadt displaying strong intent, applying pressure on Fürth’s defense and earning an early goal. Just ten minutes into the game, Sergio Lopez combined with Killian Corredor, reaching the byline to set up Hornby, who finished calmly from around twelve yards out.

Fürth showed signs of life in the 20th minute when Julian Green struck powerfully from outside the box, but Darmstadt’s goalkeeper, Marcel Schuhen, made an excellent save to tip the ball over the bar.

As the first half progressed, Fürth began to assert themselves, earning a penalty seven minutes before halftime. Felix Klaus was fouled in the area, and Noel Futkeu converted the penalty into the bottom corner, leveling the score at 1-1.

Seven minutes after the restart, Fürth took a surprise lead when Klaus assisted Futkeu, who scored with a shot that hit the inside of the post. However, Darmstadt quickly responded, equalizing shortly thereafter when Hornby set up Lidberg to net his tenth goal of the season.

Darmstadt regained the lead in the 64th minute when Hornby struck from distance, his shot deflecting into the bottom corner. The hosts extended their advantage just before the 80-minute mark, as Marco Richter’s corner found Papela, who headed in his first goal of the season, making the score 4-2.

The match concluded with Darmstadt earning a valuable victory, moving them to third place and maintaining their unbeaten home record. Fürth, on the other hand, suffered their fourth defeat in five matches, leaving them in 15th place, just three points above the relegation zone.
