2. Bundesliga: Last-placed Magdeburg Defeats Top-ranked Nürnberg

Magdeburg remains at the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga standings but improved their chances of escaping relegation with a decisive 3-0 victory over Nürnberg.

In a match held at Avnet Arena, Magdeburg struggled to score throughout the season but found their rhythm in the final 20 minutes against Nürnberg during matchday 14. Mateusz Żukowski became the first Magdeburg player to score in nearly 450 minutes of league play, netting a goal from a set-piece delivered by Barış Atik. The goal was initially delayed due to a potential offside but was confirmed after VAR review.

Nürnberg faced further challenges when Rafael Lubach received a second yellow card, leaving them with ten players. Despite this disadvantage, they remained competitive until the fifth minute of injury time. Żukowski, who had waited until matchday 14 for his first-ever 2. Bundesliga goal, scored again with a tap-in from an excellent cross by Alexander Nollenberger.

The second half was interrupted due to pyrotechnics, resulting in an additional 17 minutes of play. Nollenberger provided another assist, this time to Maximilian Breunig, who scored from a precise cross. Breunig initially thought he had scored a second goal, but it was disallowed by VAR for offside.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Magdeburg, who have faced a challenging season under coach Christian Titz. They are set to face RB Leipzig in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal, while Miroslav Klose's Nürnberg team suffered their first loss since late September.
