1. FC Köln: Current Status of Effzeh at the Midpoint of the Season

Ahead of the Bundesliga's return, analysis focuses on 1.FC Koln, a newly promoted team that has adapted well to life in Germany's top flight.

Since 1.FC Koln’s last promotion to the Bundesliga for the 2018-19 season, nearly one of the two new teams has typically been relegated the following year. Concerns arose regarding Koln's prospects for the 2025-26 season before the matches began.

After ten rounds of matches, Koln is currently ranked ninth in the standings with 14 points, celebrating significant victories over SC Freiburg, TSG Hoffenheim, and Hamburger SV.

Although Koln was challenged by stronger teams, they put forth commendable efforts. RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich secured wins against them, while VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund required late goals to surpass Koln's defense.

Under the guidance of coach Lukas Kwasniok, who previously established his strategies at SC Paderborn, Koln demonstrates strong leadership and an attacking philosophy similar to that of Steffen Baumgart.

Much of Koln's early success can be attributed to the managing director of sport, Christian Keller, and his team's accomplishments during the summer transfer window, resulting in key signings.

Marius Buelter has contributed significantly with two goals and three assists, while Isak Johannesson, signed from Fortuna Dusseldorf, has become an essential figure in midfield. Additionally, Jakub Kaminski, on loan from VfL Wolfsburg, has scored four goals and provided one assist.

A considerable portion of Koln's offensive success this season has stemmed from their attacking flanks. Kwasniok emphasizes counterattacks and overloads, creating favorable scoring opportunities.

Sebastian Sebulonsen and Kristoffer Lund effectively balance their defensive responsibilities and offensive contributions, supported by quick players like Kaminski, Said El Mala, and Ragnar Ache.

Koln's squad features a harmonious mix of youth and experience, avoiding the pitfalls often faced by newly promoted teams that rely solely on either veterans or younger players.

Talented young players such as El Mala (19), Johannesson (22), Eric Martel (23), and Kaminski (23) benefit from the guidance of seasoned players like Buelter (32), Florian Kainz (33), and Marvin Schwabe (30).

In goal, Marvin Schwabe is performing at the peak of his career, boasting a 75.5% shot-stopping percentage, ranking third among goalkeepers who have played all ten Bundesliga matches so far. He has also prevented the most expected goals (2.2) in his position, outperforming his closest competitors.
