United Overcome Streak to Enter Top Four; VAR Controversy Affects Liverpool Amid Ongoing Decline - Premier League Summary

Manchester United secured a place in the Premier League's top four with a 4-2 victory over Brighton, while Sunderland moved into second place after defeating Chelsea 2-1 on Saturday.

In the late match, Brentford triumphed over Liverpool 3-2, marking the champions' fourth consecutive league loss. Mohammed Salah scored in the 89th minute, bringing Liverpool close to equalizing, but Brentford managed to hold on during 11 minutes of added time.

The turning point of the match was a second-half penalty awarded to Brentford following a VAR review. Virgil van Dijk was penalized for a foul on Dango Ouattara, who had initially scored the opening goal in the fifth minute. The foul was originally ruled outside the penalty area, but VAR determined it occurred on the line, leading to the penalty. Igor Thiago successfully converted the penalty, restoring a two-goal lead for Brentford.

Milos Kerkez scored for Liverpool in first-half stoppage time, attempting to close the gap after Ouattara and Kevin Schade's early goals for Brentford. Liverpool's recent struggles have seen them fall four points behind league leaders Arsenal, who are set to play Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Manchester United, under Ruben Amorim, achieved their third consecutive league win, ending Brighton's streak of success at Old Trafford. Previously, Brighton had won on their last three visits and had six wins in seven league encounters against United.

United's new attacking signings, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, are beginning to show their potential. Cunha opened the scoring with a curled shot from outside the box, followed by a deflected effort from Casemiro that doubled the lead. Mbeumo scored the third goal after being set up by Sesko.

Brighton's Danny Welbeck scored a brilliant free-kick and Charalampos Kostoulas added a header, creating a tense finish. However, Mbeumo secured the victory with a second goal in the 97th minute, moving United into Champions League positions and within three points of Arsenal.

Sunderland's return to the Premier League after eight years has been promising, with Chemsdine Talbi scoring a stoppage-time winner against Chelsea. The Black Cats appear to be defying the trend of promoted teams facing immediate relegation.

Chelsea initially took the lead with Alejandro Garnacho's goal early in the match, but Sunderland equalized through Wilson Isidor. The visitors held Chelsea at bay before Talbi's late goal clinched the victory, leaving Chelsea in seventh place and diminishing their title hopes.

Newcastle defeated Fulham 2-1, with captain Bruno Guimaraes scoring a 90th-minute winner. Jacob Murphy capitalized on a defensive error for Newcastle's first goal, while Sasa Lukic equalized for Fulham. Guimaraes secured the win after Bernd Leno saved an initial shot, lifting Newcastle to 11th place.
