Mainz captain Nadiem Amiri has issued an apology for his goal celebration directed at Stuttgart fans during a match on Sunday.
Amiri scored the opening goal in Mainz's 2-1 away loss to Stuttgart and subsequently celebrated in front of the home supporters.
In a post on Instagram, the 29-year-old midfielder expressed regret for his actions, stating, “That was not appropriate in that situation. I want to apologise for this behavior.”
Prior to Amiri's goal, a Mainz supporter had received treatment and resuscitation from paramedics for over 20 minutes before being transported to a hospital. During this time, both fan groups paused their cheering in a show of respect.
Amiri acknowledged his lack of awareness regarding the severity of the situation at the time of his celebration. He commended the Stuttgart fans for their sensitivity during the medical emergency, stating, “You showed class and reacted with great sensitivity during the medical emergency in our block. I have the utmost respect for that.”
He concluded his message by wishing the affected individual a speedy recovery, saying, “Above all, I wish the affected person all the best and a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with you.”
