Augsburg has announced that Jeffrey Gouweleeuw will be sidelined for several weeks due to an internal ligament tear in his right knee.
The team recently suffered a 4-1 defeat against Mainz, marking their third consecutive loss, despite Mainz playing with ten men for a portion of the match.
Following a strong defensive record earlier in the season, where Augsburg conceded only four goals in the first 12 matches, the team's performance has declined, allowing 25 goals in the subsequent 11 encounters. Head coach Sandro Wagner now faces the challenge of reorganizing the defense in Gouweleeuw's absence.
This marks the first injury for the 34-year-old Dutch center-back in nearly two years, with the club optimistic for his return after the October international break. To fill the defensive gap, Cedric Zesiger and Noahkai Banks are expected to contend for the position alongside Keven Schlotterbeck and Chrislain Matsima in the backline.
