Manuel Neuer's potential return to the Germany national football team is being discussed following a significant setback for Marc-André ter Stegen. Ter Stegen, the Barcelona goalkeeper, will be out for months after undergoing surgery for back problems, which has also resulted in his loss of the starting position at his club.
This situation has sparked conversations among football analysts regarding Neuer's availability for the upcoming World Cup. Despite uncertainty surrounding the World Cup-winning goalkeeper's readiness, experts are considering his inclusion in the national team.
Sky expert Lothar Matthäus stated, “Basically, Julian Nagelsmann definitely has to think about it. Marc-André ter Stegen not only needs another operation, but will also have a hard time getting match practice afterwards.” He acknowledged that while Oliver Baumann, Alexander Nübel, and Bernd Leno are viable alternatives, Neuer's experience may be a consideration if trust in these candidates is lacking.
However, former Bayern Munich and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann expressed caution, indicating that the disadvantages of Neuer's potential return might outweigh the benefits. He noted, “He missed a few games last year. I don't think it's right to put him in the DFB goal now,” and suggested that Nagelsmann should use the upcoming international break to evaluate other goalkeeping options.
As Neuer approaches the age of 40 by the time of the 2026 World Cup, Ter Stegen remains hopeful of securing the starting goalkeeper position for Germany in a major tournament for the first time in his career.
