The English Championship side Southampton have intensified their pursuit of promising striker Damion Downs from Köln, reportedly including an "unrejectable" offer.
Damion Downs has had a breakthrough season for Köln in the 2. Bundesliga, with 15 goal involvements in 29 games, marking a successful first full professional season.
The 20-year-old, currently representing the United States at the Gold Cup, has attracted significant interest across Europe, with Southampton emerging as the leading contender for his signature.
Southampton's initial bid of €5 million was rejected by Köln, who are hoping Downs will sign a new contract to extend his stay beyond the current expiration date in 2026. According to the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”, Southampton's offer has now increased to at least €8 million, making it difficult for Köln to turn down.
Southampton views Downs as a crucial element in their rebuilding efforts under new head coach Will Still, with a focus on immediate promotion back to the Premier League.
A final decision on the transfer is anticipated after Downs returns from international duty. Whether Southampton's improved offer will suffice remains uncertain, but Köln is determined to retain their young star.
