The man arrested for driving his car into a crowd of football fans celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League title victory is suspected of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of drugs, according to police.
On Tuesday, a 53-year-old British man followed an ambulance through a roadblock in Liverpool's city center, ramming his Ford Galaxy vehicle into pedestrians. The roadblock had been temporarily lifted to allow paramedics to assist a man who suffered a suspected heart attack, as reported by Merseyside Police.
Among the 65 injured, four were children. Despite the serious nature of the incident, authorities confirmed that no fatalities occurred as a result of the ramming.
Merseyside Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated that the suspect was arrested on charges including attempted murder and dangerous driving, emphasizing that the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism. “There was no intelligence to suggest an incident of this nature would take place,” Sims noted, adding that an extensive investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
In response to the incident, King Charles expressed his deep shock and sadness, stating, “It is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for so many could end in such distressing circumstances.” He extended his condolences to those affected and praised the efforts of first responders.
The Prince and Princess of Wales also conveyed their sorrow, stating, “What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy.” They offered their thoughts to the injured and gratitude to the emergency services.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene as the car approached the crowd before accelerating. One observer, Matthew O’Carroll, mentioned that he and his family were fortunate to have left the parade just moments before the incident occurred.
Another witness, Robbie Potter, who survived the Manchester Arena bombing, recounted his close call, believing initially that the incident was an act of terrorism.
Police and forensics officers have been working at the scene to gather evidence following the incident.
