Ruben Amorim expressed confidence on Friday that captain Bruno Fernandes intends to remain with Manchester United, despite ongoing rumors of a lucrative transfer to Saudi Arabia.
Fernandes played a key role in United's recent match against Hong Kong, contributing to a 3-1 victory where teenage substitute Chido Obi scored twice.
Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag this season, has faced challenges, leading the team to a disappointing 15th place in the Premier League. As the post-season break approaches, he has several issues to address, particularly concerning Fernandes's future.
In response to questions about whether Fernandes's appearance against Hong Kong might be his last for United, Amorim stated, “I don’t think so, I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think so. He sees us taking some actions to change all the things ... I think he wants to stay.” He added that his conversations with Fernandes gave him the impression that the player is committed to the club.
After a lackluster first half in their second post-season friendly, United managed to improve in the second half, coming back from an early deficit. Obi scored with a turn and finish shortly after halftime and added a second with a header late in the match, while Ayden Heaven also found the net to secure a victory.
Fernandes had a strong first half at the Hong Kong Stadium, which was nearly full with 40,000 fans, before being substituted. Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho also started the match, despite speculation regarding his future at Old Trafford. Regulars Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund participated as well, as the team faced a slick pitch due to light rain.
The match began with a setback for United when they fell behind to a goal from Hong Kong, stemming from a mistake by stand-in goalkeeper Tom Heaton. Despite a few missed opportunities, including one where Fernandes failed to convert a clear chance, the team managed to rally in the second half.
Amad Diallo, who previously faced backlash from fans, made an appearance alongside Obi as Amorim implemented significant changes to the lineup during the second half.
