1. FC Köln has secured promotion to the Bundesliga as champions of the second division, following a decisive 4-0 victory over Kaiserslautern on the final matchday. They are joined by HSV, who had already achieved promotion in the previous matchday.
In the first half, Eric Martel and Luca Waldschmidt scored, giving Köln a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime, much to the delight of their fans.
The second half continued in a similar fashion, despite Waldschmidt missing a penalty in the 56th minute. Goals from Florian Kainz and retiring player Mark Uth, in his final game, capped off a strong performance from Köln.
This victory ensures that Köln is promoted back to the Bundesliga at the first attempt, finishing the season with 61 points.
Additionally, Köln may be joined by another team in the Bundesliga, as SV Elversberg is set to face Heidenheim in the promotion/relegation playoffs starting on Thursday. This follows Elversberg's second season in the 2. Bundesliga after their promotion from the third division in 2023.
