VfL Wolfsburg Faces SC Freiburg in Key Match as Fifth-Place Team Seeks to Maintain European Qualification Position

VfL Wolfsburg (10-9-11, 12th) faces SC Freiburg (14-6-10, 5th) in a Bundesliga match, with Wolfsburg holding a minimal chance of qualifying for European competitions. Freiburg, currently in a European competition spot, is being pursued by several teams.

Wolfsburg has struggled recently, managing only four goals in their last two matches against RB Leipzig and 1. FSV Mainz 05, resulting in a defeat and a draw. The team has not won since March 1, and their chances of finishing in a European spot are estimated at 1.44%, according to an ELO simulation model. They have also struggled at home, with their last victory at the Volkswagen Arena occurring nearly four months ago.

Speculation surrounds the future of coach Ralph Hasenhüttl, whose contract runs until the end of the 2025/26 season. The club's sporting director indicated that they would evaluate the situation after the season. Potential candidates to replace Hasenhüttl include Jacob Neestrup of FC København, Brian Priske, Lars Friis, and Marco Rose, recently dismissed from RB Leipzig.

Injuries continue to plague Wolfsburg, with several key players unavailable, including goalkeeper Marius Müller and left-back Rogério. The club is also managing the recovery of young centre-back David Odogu, who has faced ongoing injury issues.

On the other hand, SC Freiburg enters the match following two wins against Mönchengladbach and Hoffenheim, currently sitting in fifth place and three points clear of European competition. Freiburg has a 43.89% chance of qualifying for Europe and a 12.23% chance for the Champions League. They have previously defeated Wolfsburg 3-2 in their last encounter.

Freiburg's away performance has been less impressive, with a record of 5-4-6 and a negative goal difference. The team is dealing with fewer injuries compared to Wolfsburg, although starting goalkeeper Noah Atubolu is sidelined. Coach Julian Schuster expressed confidence in the younger players stepping up in the absence of veterans.

In summary, both teams face critical matches ahead, with Wolfsburg seeking to improve their standings and Freiburg aiming to secure their position in European competitions.
