Slot's Modest Celebration Follows Revelation of Title Prediction

Liverpool centre-half Ibrahima Konate has revealed that manager Arne Slot informed the team last summer of their potential to win the Premier League title this season.

Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp in July 2024, successfully ended Manchester City’s record streak of four consecutive league titles by leading Liverpool to their 20th English top-flight title on Sunday, following a decisive 5-1 victory over Tottenham at Anfield.

“I think he brings something new, like the style of playing,” said the 25-year-old Konate.

Konate noted that before the season began, Slot highlighted why the team fell short the previous year, emphasizing necessary improvements. “He said if we change that and improve on that we have a big chance to win the league. And that’s what we’ve done since the start of the season. We have to be happy,” he stated.

After taking over from Klopp, who had a highly successful nine-year tenure, Slot transitioned from a high-pressing style to a more controlled, possession-based approach. This strategy proved effective as Liverpool secured the title with four matches remaining.

Following Sunday’s victory, Slot celebrated modestly on the pitch at Anfield, but Konate believes the manager deserves significant recognition for the team's success. “I saw him on the pitch and he didn’t really want to take the praise, he walked behind us and it’s crazy to be humble like that,” Konate remarked. “OK, we are on the pitch and we run and do everything but he has done a lot as well for us. Thanks to him, thanks to the fans.”

Konate played a crucial role in Liverpool’s first Premier League title in five years, forming a strong partnership with captain Virgil van Dijk in defense. As he approaches the final year of his contract, he refrained from discussing his future, stating it was “a conversation with the club,” but acknowledged the significance of winning the Premier League.

“It’s the most important for a player because when you retire it’s the only thing you really remember, you still have it between your hands,” Konate explained. “Especially to win the Premier League -- what a trophy.”

He reflected on the emotional experience of the win, stating, “After the game I walked into the stadium and just sat in the stand to feel like a fan and I don’t have words to describe what I felt. I just wanted to enjoy the moment on my own.”

Konate expressed gratitude for the collective achievement, emphasizing the joy of winning in front of 60,000 fans and the significance of finally claiming the title after four seasons. “It’s amazing after four seasons I did it, finally, and I’m very happy. We are in the best league in the world and we know how hard it is to win the Premier League every season,” he concluded. “Now to win it is crazy. I’m the first French player from Liverpool to lift it. Unbelievable.”
