Two prominent figures in German football, Lothar Matthäus and Oliver Kahn, have expressed differing views on Antonio Rüdiger's conduct during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.
The match, held last Saturday, ended in a loss for Rüdiger's team. Following his substitution in the 111th minute, Rüdiger displayed strong emotions, which culminated in him throwing a cooling pack onto the pitch in frustration after a controversial referee decision.
Lothar Matthäus criticized Rüdiger's actions, stating, “Antonio Rüdiger's behaviour was absolutely unacceptable, I've never seen that before. […] I think this must have consequences, even within the national team, regardless of his sporting value to the team,” during an interview with Sky Germany.
In contrast, Oliver Kahn offered a more lenient perspective on his personal Twitter/X account, remarking, “Emotions on the pitch are not always helpful. But who doesn't overshoot the mark sometimes. Rüdiger has shown insight. That should be enough for now.”
Rüdiger also suffered a knee injury during the match, which will sideline him for the remainder of the season. Additionally, he has received a significant suspension, currently totaling 12 games.
