Reports indicate that Manchester United is positioning itself as a strong contender to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah, who is set to become a free agent this summer.
The 29-year-old defender has confirmed he will leave Leverkusen when his contract expires at the end of June, having played over 50 matches for club and country this season. His impending availability has attracted interest from several prominent European clubs, including Bayern München, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.
Manchester United is considering bringing Tah to Old Trafford as part of their strategy to strengthen their defensive lineup ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. With the team looking to recover from a disappointing season, Tah’s experience and leadership could be a significant asset.
Bayern München, which previously attempted to sign Tah last summer, remains interested in retaining the defender within the Bundesliga. Real Madrid may have an advantage due to the anticipated appointment of current Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, with whom Tah has a strong rapport.
Barcelona is also monitoring the situation but may face challenges in making a competitive offer due to ongoing financial restrictions that have previously affected player registrations. The club's salary cap issues have led to delays in past signings, raising doubts about their ability to secure Tah.
Following Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw with St. Pauli on April 20, Tah confirmed his intention to leave the club but has not yet decided on his next destination. “There’s no exact timeline,” he stated. “The club knows my intentions, and nothing has changed in that regard.”
Having been eligible to negotiate with clubs outside Germany since January, Tah's next move will likely be influenced by both competitive ambitions and personal connections, making this one of the more compelling free-agent stories of the summer.
