Germany faced Italy in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final tie, securing a 2-1 victory for the visiting team at the San Siro.
Under the management of Julian Nagelsmann, Germany managed to overcome a strong Italian side. This result is expected to please fans of Die Mannschaft and the 37-year-old head coach as they prepare for the second leg of the quarter-final, scheduled for 8:45 PM (CET) in Dortmund this Sunday.
The match began with Italy taking the lead in the 9th minute. Matteo Politano's well-placed ball allowed him to break behind Germany's David Raum. Although Jonathan Tah deflected Politano's pass away from Moise Kean, Sandro Tonali capitalized on the situation, scoring with a first-time shot.
Germany reacted to the early setback, with Leon Goretzka missing a chance from a set-piece and later testing Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from distance. Italy responded with a shot from Tonali, which was saved by Germany's Oliver Baumann. Baumann was called into action again shortly after, making a crucial save to deny a close-range effort from Moise Kean.
As the first half concluded, Germany's Mainz duo of Burkardt and Amiri came close to equalizing, with Burkardt's shot blocked and Amiri's free-kick sailing over the goal.
Unhappy with the first-half performance, Nagelsmann made two substitutions at halftime, bringing on Nico Schlotterbeck and Tim Kleindienst for Raum and Burkardt. Kleindienst made an immediate impact, scoring a header from a Joshua Kimmich cross just four minutes into the second half.
The match saw a fragmented flow as both teams vied for control. With 25 minutes left, Stuttgart's Jamie Lewelling replaced Nadiem Amiri. Giacomo Raspadori had a chance to put Italy back in the game, but his shot was easily saved by Baumann.
With under 15 minutes remaining, Germany took a 2-1 lead thanks to another contribution from Kimmich, whose corner was deftly headed in by Goretzka. Italy almost equalized soon after, with Baumann making another crucial save in response to a deflected shot.
Germany's goalkeeper continued to thwart Italy's attempts as the match neared its conclusion, particularly denying Daniel Maldini from long range. To ensure defensive stability, Nagelsmann substituted Robert Andrich for Pascal Groß as the match entered the final moments. Four minutes of additional time were not enough for Italy, leading to their defeat.
