Exciting Champions League Matchups Unveiled

Liverpool will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 of this season's Champions League, while reigning champions Real Madrid will meet their city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Arne Slot's Liverpool secured their place in this stage by finishing first in the league phase, while PSG, finishing 15th, advanced after defeating Brest 10-0 on aggregate in a two-legged play-off.

The first leg of the Liverpool-PSG tie is scheduled for March 5 at the Parc des Princes, with the return leg at Anfield on March 11.

Previously, the two clubs met in the Champions League group stage during the 2018/19 season, where PSG won 2-1 at home following Liverpool's 3-2 victory in England. Their only knockout encounter occurred in the semi-finals of the now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup in 1997, where PSG triumphed 3-2 on aggregate.

Currently, Liverpool leads the English Premier League, eight points ahead of Arsenal, while PSG remains unbeaten in Ligue 1, holding a 10-point lead at the top.

The winner of the Liverpool-PSG match will face either Club Brugge or Aston Villa in the quarter-finals. Aston Villa seeks to avenge a 1-0 defeat to Club Brugge during the league phase in November.

Real Madrid, fresh from eliminating Manchester City in the play-offs, will host Atletico Madrid in the first leg on March 4. The two teams have met in the competition for four consecutive seasons in the last decade, with Real Madrid winning each time, including finals in 2014 and 2016.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone expressed confidence in his team's ability to compete, while Real Madrid's Emilio Butragueno emphasized their readiness for the challenge.

The winners of the Real Madrid-Atletico tie will advance to face either PSV Eindhoven or Arsenal, with Arsenal having previously faced PSV in last season's group stage.

Another notable matchup features Bayern Munich against Bayer Leverkusen, with Leverkusen, coached by former Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso, remaining unbeaten in their last six encounters with Bayern.

Feyenoord will take on Italian champions Inter Milan after eliminating AC Milan in the play-offs, with the winners facing Bayern or Leverkusen in the quarter-finals.

This marks the first time since the 2005/06 season that two Dutch clubs have reached the last 16. Barcelona, currently leading La Liga, will play Benfica, a team they recently defeated 5-4 in Lisbon.

Last season's runners-up, Borussia Dortmund, will compete against French side Lille. The semi-final draw suggests potential matchups between Liverpool and Arsenal, or between Real Madrid and PSG.

The final of this season's Champions League is set to take place in Munich on May 31.
