Ange Postecoglou has indicated that Tottenham Hotspur is unlikely to make any additional signings during the January transfer window, despite facing a significant injury crisis within the squad.
The manager is under considerable pressure, with Tottenham currently positioned 15th in the league standings and having secured only one victory in their last ten matches.
As Spurs prepare for their upcoming Europa League match against Hoffenheim, Postecoglou is set to be missing more than ten players, including key figures such as Christian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Rodrigo Bentancur.
While Tottenham has added 19-year-old Min-hyeok Yang and Czech goalkeeper AntonÃn Kinský to their roster, Postecoglou suggests that further reinforcements are improbable. “Yeah, potentially (we won’t sign any players). The club is working hard to try to get some help for the players,” he stated.
He added, “But as far as I know, there’s nothing imminent. But things happen quickly in the last week of the window, so still hopeful.”
Despite their struggles in the Premier League, a victory over Hoffenheim could secure Tottenham's automatic qualification for the Europa League play-offs. The team remains competitive in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, with Postecoglou dismissing claims that his players are prioritizing cup competitions over league performance.
“Nah mate. The players are giving everything every game. This has been a good solid two months of us relying on a small group of players,” he remarked. He acknowledged the toll that frequent matches have taken, noting, “We’ve been playing two games a week for this whole period. That’s why we’re picking up some injuries now.”
Postecoglou emphasized that the players are fully committed, asserting, “They’re trying their utmost in every fixture we have.” He also pointed out that teams involved in European competitions often face increased injury rates.
“We’ve been hit the hardest but it is becoming more prevalent. If you look at the teams in Europe, even last year, Newcastle really suffered, and Villa to a certain extent this year,” he explained. “You really need a strong squad of players and keep them healthy to cope with playing in Europe if you do well in the cup competitions.”
He noted that the added fixtures from their success in the Carabao Cup and additional European matches have exacerbated the situation, stating, “All these things are taking its toll.”
