Ange Postecoglou has indicated that Tottenham Hotspur requires new signings to support their injury-hit squad, suggesting that the conclusion of the league phase of European football may lead to increased transfer activity.
Postecoglou's team was without 14 players during their crucial 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim in the Europa League, which resulted from a mix of injuries and eligibility issues.
This victory was a significant step toward achieving a top-eight finish in the group stage. However, Tottenham currently sits in 15th place in the Premier League, having secured only one win in their last ten league matches.
Following the match, Postecoglou announced that England striker Dominic Solanke would be sidelined for approximately six weeks due to a knee injury, further complicating his challenges.
While the Australian coach mentioned that Solanke's injury would not alter the club's transfer plans, he foresees a possible surge in activity before the transfer window closes on February 3.
The Champions League group phase concludes next Wednesday, with the Europa League group stage finishing the following day. When asked if this could lead to a busy transfer window, Postecoglou acknowledged the potential for such a scenario.
He elaborated that the current European competition schedule has delayed clarity on clubs' standings, which could catalyze quicker transfer decisions if significant teams find themselves out of contention.
Postecoglou emphasized the need for reinforcement, stating, “It’s not just about bringing in another body, but there is still no doubt we need to help these players because we’ve still got some significant games in the next two or three weeks before we get players back.”
He cautioned that not signing players could be risky, but acknowledged that the club is working to improve the situation.
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and defender Sergio Reguilon will be eligible for Monday’s important match against Leicester, while there are concerns regarding Djed Spence, and Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma may also miss the game.
Tottenham's injury woes have attracted criticism regarding Postecoglou’s tactics and training intensity. The coach has accepted responsibility for the injuries but remains confident in the team's progress under his management.
He remarked, “I’m responsible for this, if you want a head on a stick, take mine, but I’m absolutely 100 percent confident that we are in a better place as a football club than when I started.”
