RB Leipzig's January 2025 Transfer Overview

In the eighth installment of the "January 2025 Transfer Primers," the focus shifts to RasenBallSport Leipzig, which is experiencing a challenging start to the season. The club's current league points total of 27 marks its worst position since the 2021 season under coach Jesse Marsch.

Despite the team's struggles, the core group of players, including Loïs Openda, Benjamin Sesko, Christoph Castello Lukeba, and Xavi Simons, is in its second season together. The absence of key player Dani Olmo, described as the "ultimate playmaker," has significantly impacted the team's performance. Additionally, the simultaneous long-term injuries to Simons, David Raum, Castello Lukeba, and Yussuf Poulsen have compounded the difficulties faced by head coach Marco Rose.

The club's financial situation remains strong, with an estimated autumn transfer balance of +€34 million, indicating that significant transfer activity is anticipated. Players such as Randal Kolo Muani and Oscar Mingueza are reportedly linked to moves to Leipzig, while Jan-Niklas Beste is seen as a potential creative midfielder addition. Sporting director Marcel Schäfer is expected to address the loss of Benjamin Henrichs by targeting players from RB Salzburg.

In terms of player departures, transfer flops André Silva and Eljif Elmas are likely candidates for loans, with potential destinations already considered. Notably, there are no expiring contracts among the current roster, as all players are secured through 2026, a situation attributed to the effective management of Schäfer's predecessor.

Looking ahead, the team has identified further needs in various positions, including center-back, right-back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, and center-forward. While rumors surrounding potential signings continue, the club's leadership remains stable for now, although changes could occur if performance does not improve.

Rumored targets include Diogo Leite, Amar Dedic, Abdukodir Khusanov, Oscar Mingueza, and Randal Kolo Muani, as the club seeks to strengthen its squad during the upcoming transfer window.
