January 2025 Transfer Overview: Werder Bremen

In the ninth of the "January 2025 Transfer Primers," the focus shifts to the current state of SV Werder Bremen. The club's director of professional football, Clemens Fritz, and head coach, Ole Werner, are steering the team through a pivotal period.

As the 2023/24 Bundesliga season concluded, Werder Bremen faced significant competition in the race for European qualification. Despite being initially perceived as outside contenders, the team has gained respect following a series of strong performances, including four consecutive wins at the end of the calendar year. Head coach Ole Werner's tactical approach has led to contributions from eleven different players in scoring league goals, showcasing the team's offensive depth.

Werder Bremen's recent successes include not only victories in seven Bundesliga matches but also commendable draws against top teams such as Leverkusen, Dortmund, and Stuttgart, as well as a narrow defeat to Frankfurt. The team's resilience was evident in their comeback against Hoffenheim, highlighting their competitive spirit. Emerging talents like Jens Stage, Marco Grüll, and Derrick Köhn have added to the team's scoring options.

However, the team must address the underperformance of certain players, including Olivier Deman, Julian Malatini, Skelly Alvero, Leon Opitz, and Abdenego Nankishi. The management is reportedly working towards offloading these players to improve the squad's financial and competitive standing.

Additionally, several contracts are nearing expiration, notably those of Milos Veljkovic and Anthony Jung, both of whom play crucial roles in the team's dynamics. While the club is keen on retaining Jung, the future of Oliver Burke remains uncertain as he may be heading towards free agency.

Looking ahead, Werder Bremen recognizes the need for specific player roles, particularly a "holding six" or a skilled defensive midfielder, as current options have not fulfilled expectations. Despite the absence of solid rumors regarding potential signings, the club's improved financial situation and enhanced merchandising revenues suggest that a significant acquisition may be on the horizon.

Potential targets include Jordy Makengo, Ramiz Hamouda, Linton Maina, Jens Castrop, and Matys Tel, indicating strategic plans for strengthening the team in the upcoming transfer window.
