Veteran German defender Robin Koch reflected on the unusual nature of Eintracht Frankfurt's league defeat to Mainz on Saturday. Despite dominating the match statistically, Frankfurt was unable to secure a favorable outcome.
Eintracht Frankfurt had a man advantage for 70 minutes and outperformed Mainz in various metrics, including a 34 to 9 advantage in shots and 18 quality scoring chances. They also led significantly in crosses (49-3) and corners (17-2).
The match's turning point was the series of individual mistakes made by Frankfurt players, including a poor pass from Ellyes Skhiri, two errors from goalkeeper Kaua Santos, and a botched clearance from Arthur Theate, which allowed Mainz to secure an upset victory.
Frankfurt attackers Can Uzun and Omar Marmoush also missed critical opportunities to change the game's outcome. Mainz's coach, Bo Henriksen, acknowledged that the win was not the most deserved, while Eintracht's coach, Dino Toppmöller, described the result as "plain weird."
Koch, who has played over 300 games across various German divisions and three years in the English Premier League, stated he had never experienced a match like this before. He expressed disbelief at the outcome, noting that the team typically would have scored multiple goals given their chances.
"We let in goals out of nowhere," Koch remarked. "Today was extreme. I've personally never experienced a match like that in my career. It's really difficult to head into the locker room right now."
Following the match, Koch voiced his support for young goalkeeper Kaua Santos, who had made two critical errors leading to goals. Despite Santos's earlier successes this season and a recent contract extension, these mistakes raised concerns.
Koch emphasized the team's commitment to support Santos, stating, "We are there for him as a team to build him back up. I think he is mentally strong. He's a young player, and something like this is part of his development. Football is made up of mistakes. I don't think it will be a problem for him to get back out there."
