Bayer Leverkusen vs. Freiburg Preview: Defending Champions Aim to Sustain Strong Performance

Bayer Leverkusen aims to secure an eighth consecutive competitive victory as they face Freiburg at the BayArena in a Bundesliga match on Saturday.

Since returning from the November international break, Leverkusen has been in impressive form, achieving a seven-game winning streak across all competitions. This run began with league victories over Heidenheim and Union Berlin, complemented by a 5-0 Champions League win against Red Bull Salzburg. The team further triumphed over Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal and St. Pauli in the league, before edging out Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League.

In their most recent outing, Leverkusen secured a 2-0 victory against Augsburg, benefiting from Bayern's defeat to Mainz. Goals from Martin Terrier and Florian Wirtz allowed the second-placed Leverkusen to close the gap to leaders Bayern to four points.

As they return to BayArena, Leverkusen seeks to extend their unbeaten home league record. In two encounters last season, they narrowly defeated Freiburg, including a 2-1 win at home in October 2023.

In team news, manager Xabi Alonso will be without injured players Jonas Hofmann, Amine Adli, and Victor Boniface.

Freiburg enters the weekend in fifth place, having recorded seven wins, three draws, and four losses in 14 league games. They have shown resilience lately, with only one defeat in their last six Bundesliga matches, which occurred on November 23 against Borussia Dortmund.

Freiburg rebounded by earning seven points from their last three league fixtures, starting with a 3-1 home victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach. They followed with a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim and a narrow win against Wolfsburg, where they initially led 3-0 before surviving a late comeback attempt from their opponents.

However, Freiburg seeks to improve their away performance, having not won any of their last four Bundesliga away matches since defeating Werder Bremen on October 5.

In team news, Freiburg will be without Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, who is still recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
