Werder Bremen has announced that it will no longer communicate via the social media platform X, becoming the second Bundesliga club to do so after FC St. Pauli.
Club CEO Klaus Filbry conveyed this decision during the club's annual general meeting on Monday. He expressed concerns regarding the impact of Elon Musk's ownership of the platform, which was formerly known as Twitter.
Werder Bremen criticized the rise of hate speech and extremist content on X since Musk's acquisition, stating, “Since Elon Musk took over the platform, hate speech, hatred towards minorities, right-wing extremist posts and conspiracy theories have been allowed to spread at an incredible pace, all under the guise of freedom of speech.”
The club further remarked that the platform's monitoring is nearly nonexistent and that its algorithms and decision-making processes lack transparency. Additionally, they accused Musk of utilizing the network as a political tool.
In their statement, Werder Bremen affirmed their commitment to opposing hatred, discrimination, and exclusion, emphasizing their values of diversity, freedom, democracy, cohesion, and solidarity.
Moving forward, Werder Bremen will use BlueSky for their communications, following in the footsteps of FC St. Pauli.
