Bayer Leverkusen faced FC Copenhagen in their Champions League opener, ending the match in a 2-2 draw after trailing 1-0 at halftime.
Post-match, Simon Rolfes, Bayer 04's managing director for sport, expressed dissatisfaction with the team's first-half performance, mentioning that they played too slowly and had poor positioning.
“We didn’t start well. We played a bit too slowly and our positioning was poor. We didn’t really get into the game, and Copenhagen were strong," Rolfes stated.
However, he noted a marked improvement in the second half, citing increased pressure and intensity, which he attributed to successful substitutions made during the game.
After Leverkusen equalised at 1-1, FC Copenhagen quickly regained the lead, but Leverkusen responded once more to secure a draw.
“In the end, I think the team believed and gave everything to get the equaliser,” Rolfes commented.
He acknowledged the difficulty of securing all three points against Copenhagen, highlighting their organizational strength and defensive capabilities.
Rolfes described the result as "a point won," recognizing the challenges posed by the Danish team.
