Following Bayern Munich's 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim on matchday 4 of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Oliver Baumann are approaching a historic Bundesliga record.
Both Neuer and Baumann share several similarities. They both transitioned from their hometown clubs—Gelsenkirchen for Neuer and Freiburg for Baumann—to join Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim, respectively. Each goalkeeper has also taken on the role of captain for their respective teams and has been selected as the number one for the German national team.
Currently, Neuer and Baumann have faced each other 26 times in the Bundesliga. The only goalkeeping duo to have played against each other more times is Eike Immel and Uli Stein, who met 27 times.
With both goalkeepers serving as captains and undisputed starters for their clubs, it is anticipated that they will match this record during the second half of the 2025/26 season when Bayern hosts Hoffenheim for their return match.
Looking ahead, both Neuer and Baumann are expected to continue their Bundesliga careers next season, which would allow them to set a new record as the most frequently opposing goalkeepers in the league's history.
Out of the 26 encounters to date, Neuer has won 18 matches, while Baumann has emerged victorious in four, with the remaining four games ending in draws.
