Sebastian Kehl has expressed confidence that Borussia Dortmund can retain Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka for the remainder of the Club World Cup.
Currently, Chukwuemeka's loan from Chelsea to Borussia Dortmund is set to expire at the end of the month, which would render the 21-year-old unavailable for the rest of Dortmund’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign unless an agreement is reached with Chelsea to extend his stay.
While a permanent transfer appears financially unfeasible, Dortmund remains hopeful of securing a short-term extension of the midfielder's loan for the tournament in the United States.
“I’m very confident we can make it work,” Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl told reporters on Wednesday. “We don’t want to get worse. That’s why we’d like to keep him. Chelsea know that too.”
Discussions between the two clubs are already underway, not only concerning Chukwuemeka but also involving winger Jamie Gittens, as confirmed by Kehl.
