Leon Goretzka has expressed his desire to remain at Bayern München, seeking to potentially extend his contract despite previous uncertainties regarding his future with the club.
Just a year prior, the German international faced speculation about a possible departure from Bayern when he was informed that he might have limited playing time. This led to widespread belief that he could be on the transfer list. However, under new head coach Vincent Kompany, the 30-year-old midfielder has significantly improved his standing within the team.
“I’m not planning to leave. Why would I?” Goretzka stated in an interview with Welt am Sonntag. “My plan is definitely to play for Bayern next season.”
Goretzka's current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026. This season, he has participated in 40 competitive matches and has successfully regained his place in the national team. He attributes his resurgence to Bayern and his supportive environment.
“I feel incredibly comfortable at this club and in this city. I love Bayern München, the people here, and my teammates. We have a great group,” he remarked. “This club deserves to win titles, and I believe something big is taking shape again. I definitely see myself as part of that.”
While Goretzka remains committed to the club, reports from Sky Germany indicate that a contract extension is not currently being discussed, which may leave his future in limbo ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window.
The midfielder also openly discussed being excluded from Germany’s squad for the Euro 2024 tournament, describing it as “the biggest disappointment” of his career. He noted that a conversation with coach Julian Nagelsmann was necessary to address his omission.
“We couldn’t just move on without addressing things,” Goretzka explained. “It was obvious that we needed to talk.”
He acknowledged the support from his family and close friends during challenging times, as well as the guidance of Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß, who he credited for providing crucial support.
“Uli always had a good sense of when to reach out. We had many important conversations. He’s always been there for me,” Goretzka added.
