Family has consistently been a central theme in Ange Postecoglou's approach to football management. This focus was evident when he made history as the first Australian football manager to secure a major European trophy, taking a moment to celebrate on the field with his wife and children before honoring his late father during the post-game press conference.
Postecoglou's emphasis on family also played a significant role in Tottenham’s quest for Europa League success, particularly evident in the team's victory over Manchester United, which ended a 17-year trophy drought.
Following the win, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario shared with PA Agency that Postecoglou had organized a surprise video featuring messages from family members, which was shown during a pre-match meeting in Bilbao. According to Tom Allnutt from The Times, the video moved many players to tears.
Vicario stated, “The message was just to do our things, to play for us, for our fans and especially for our fans who were here to support us in the stands. We had an emotional video from our families in the pre-match meeting. It was very emotional and I think in the back of our minds they played a big part of the game.” He added that his parents, who were present at the celebration, encouraged the team to fight for Tottenham Hotspur.
During the celebratory event at the Hotel Carlton in Bilbao, Postecoglou reiterated the importance of family in his speech. He expressed pride in his players and staff, referring to them as a family and acknowledging the role of their loved ones in their journey to becoming champions.
Postecoglou remarked, “These boys, I am so proud of them and the staff. They have been the best family that I could ever be associated with but more importantly is everyone in this room and how you have helped these boys become champions.” He emphasized the significance of the night and the collective effort that led to their success, stating, “I have never been prouder to be a manager of a football club, than a manager of these players and the people with them.”
