Nico Schlotterbeck contributed two assists from corner-kicks in Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 victory over Mainz. Following the match, the defender discussed the unexpected decision to take corners.
Before the match against Mainz at Signal Iduna Park, Schlotterbeck had not previously taken a corner-kick in the Bundesliga. His two deliveries resulted in goals for teammates Maximilian Beier and Emre Can.
"Daniel Svensson took the corners during the week," Schlotterbeck explained. “Since he was unavailable, we had two left-footers in Karim (Adeyemi) and me. The coach recalled Holger Badstuber's past experiences, who also took corners during his time as a left-back at Bayern.”
Holger Badstuber, while facing injury challenges throughout his career, was known for his skill with the ball. He had been designated for set-piece duties since his youth days at Bayern, where he also scored his first goal for the first team from a direct free-kick.
