Former Bayern Munich midfielder Lothar Matthäus has expressed disappointment regarding the limited use of Thomas Müller during the UEFA Champions League play-off second-leg against Celtic, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Matthäus, a Bayern Munich legend with over 189 appearances for the club, criticized head coach Vincent Kompany's decision to substitute Müller in the dying moments of the match. He conveyed his feelings during an interview with Sky Sports Germany, stating that Müller deserved more playing time.
“That was humiliating. It made me sad, and I feel sorry for him [Müller]. I was shocked,” Matthäus remarked. He emphasized Müller’s status as one of the greatest and most successful players, arguing that the brief appearance was not warranted.
“So, for those few seconds, the coach can sub on another player. If that is the perspective for the future, then he should do something else,” Matthäus added. He expressed concern that Müller likely did not enjoy the experience, questioning the value of being credited with another Champions League appearance under such circumstances.
The criticism follows Kompany’s decision to bring Müller on in the 95th minute, just before the final whistle. Additionally, Harry Kane was substituted in the 46th minute due to injury, leaving Bayern without a recognized striker for the remainder of the match.
