Following a goalless draw in Leverkusen, Bayern Munich's sporting director Christoph Freund has ruled the club out of the race for defender Jonathan Tah, while Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro believes Bayern may still be contenders.
Jonathan Tah was named man of the match during the match against Bayern, marking his second accolade in three encounters this season, as Xabi Alonso maintained his unbeaten record against the champions.
Earlier this summer, Tah was on the verge of joining Bayern but ultimately chose to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, where he is in the final year of his contract. With four and a half months remaining on his deal, the 29-year-old has yet to make a decision regarding his future.
While Spanish media have reported that Tah has reached a full agreement with FC Barcelona, Leverkusen has not given up hope of retaining the player who has spent a decade at the club. In a recent appearance on Sky 90, Carro expressed his desire to extend Tah's contract, noting that the player is still weighing his options.
Carro stated, “He’s taking it easy. I really believe that he hasn’t made up his mind 100 percent yet. I know that he would like to have an experience somewhere else. But, in the end, if he doesn’t find anything that convinces him, he can always stay at home with us.”
Tah echoed this sentiment post-match, expressing his satisfaction with commuting from Düsseldorf to the BayArena for training. He also credited coach Alonso for the team's strong performance against Bayern, stating, “It has to be said that the coach always has the right instinct.”
Additionally, former Leverkusen defender Jens Nowotny, currently an assistant coach for Germany's U16 team, remarked that a move outside the Bundesliga could be a “logical move” for Tah at this stage in his career.
