Borussia Dortmund expressed significant interest in signing Florian Wirtz during his youth career at FC Köln, according to Lars Ricken.
Ricken, currently the managing director for sport at Borussia Dortmund and a former academy director, acknowledged that the club recognized Wirtz's talent early on. "Yes, we would have liked to have brought him to BVB back then. As a very young player, he was already a top talent, so every good scouting department should have known his name," he stated in an interview with Sport Bild.
Despite engaging in discussions with Wirtz's father, Dortmund ultimately lost the opportunity to Bayer Leverkusen, where Wirtz signed in January 2020. Ricken noted, “I had some very pleasant conversations with Florian's father. But the family decided not to go straight to Bayern or Dortmund.”
