Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou attributed his team's recent poor performance to an ongoing injury crisis following a 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Friday.
The loss leaves Spurs in 11th place in the Premier League, marking their ninth defeat in 18 matches this season.
Despite their struggles in the league, Tottenham has performed better in other competitions, advancing to the League Cup semi-finals and making progress toward the Europa League knockout stage.
However, the additional fixtures have strained a squad that is currently missing key players, including first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and center-backs Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Ben Davies.
Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga scored the only goal of the match in the first half, propelling the team to third place under former Spurs manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Tottenham controlled over 70 percent of possession during the match but was unable to convert that advantage into goals.
Postecoglou remarked, “We are asking a lot of this group of players, a lot of these guys are playing every three days. It’s only logical they are not going to be at their sharpest, but they are trying.”
He expressed disappointment over the goal conceded but acknowledged the effort put in by his players, stating, “We just couldn’t get over the line.”
The injury situation worsened for Tottenham ahead of their upcoming match against Wolves, as Djed Spence received a red card in stoppage time, further depleting defensive options.
Additionally, Radu Dragusin, the club’s only fit natural center-back, suffered an ankle injury and had to leave the game. Postecoglou noted, “He was a bit sore. He hurt his ankle and said he couldn’t continue so we’ll have to wait and see.”
