Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen Preview: Champions Seek Victory on the Road

Bayer Leverkusen is set to seek their first Bundesliga away win since September as they prepare to face Union Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Saturday.

Union Berlin currently occupies the 10th position in the league standings, having secured four wins, four draws, and three losses from their 11 matches. The team is on a poor run, failing to win in their last four league games since a victory over Holstein Kiel on October 20. Their recent matches included home draws against Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg, along with a narrow away loss to Bayern Munich. Last Saturday, Union suffered another defeat against Wolfsburg, where a 71st-minute goal from Ridle Baku led to a 1-0 loss, marking their third consecutive match without scoring.

Despite their recent struggles, Union Berlin remains hopeful for a positive outcome in the upcoming match, as they have not lost any of their five home league games this season, recording three wins and two draws. The team has been defensively solid at home, conceding only three goals in these matches.

In terms of team news, Union is expected to be without Yannic Stein and Andrej Ilić for the match.

Bayer Leverkusen, under the management of Xabi Alonso, is currently in fourth place, trailing leaders Bayern Munich by nine points. The team recently ended a streak of three consecutive league draws with a comeback victory against Heidenheim, winning 5-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Patrik Schick and additional goals from Exequiel Palacios and Granit Xhaka. Leverkusen also enjoyed a dominant 5-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League, with Florian Wirtz scoring twice.

As they transition from back-to-back home matches to this away fixture, Leverkusen aims to secure their first away victory since a 4-1 triumph over Hoffenheim on September 14. Although they remain unbeaten in away games this season, they have drawn their last three away league matches.

In team news, Leverkusen will be missing Victor Boniface, Jonas Hofmann, Amine Adli, Jeanuël Belocian, and Martin Terrier for the upcoming match.
