German football legend Mario Götze expressed his satisfaction during a post-match interview at the Sky Sports pitch-side desk on Saturday evening.
Four years ago, Götze's career faced significant challenges after he was released by Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2019/20 season. The scorer of Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning goal spent the summer as a free agent, with no clubs showing interest in signing him, including Bayer Leverkusen. PSV Eindhoven eventually acquired him well after the transfer deadline, leading some to speculate about his potential retirement due to a metabolic disorder.
In a prior interview with Kicker Magazine, Götze expressed his desire to continue playing in order to compete for the Champions League title. Although he narrowly missed winning the Europa League with his previous club, he may still achieve this goal with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Under the guidance of Eintracht trainer Dino Toppmöller, Götze has been utilized on the attacking right wing this season, scoring in both matches where he played in that position. His contributions have bolstered Frankfurt's status as serious title contenders.
After the recent Topspiel, Götze acknowledged the importance of realism regarding his team's title aspirations, stating, "It's a long season," despite being reminded that one-third of the season has already passed. He noted the team's youth and potential fluctuations in performance but emphasized the need to assess their games individually.
Götze highlighted the quality of the young players in the squad, describing the environment as enjoyable and focused on the essence of football. He remarked, "I feel like the grandpa here," indicating a shift towards prioritizing recovery and communication with the coach and fitness staff, acknowledging the demands of playing in a busy English fixture schedule.
