Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has defended the club's decision to appeal a seven-game ban imposed on midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur for controversial remarks regarding teammate Son Heung-min. Postecoglou emphasized the need for greater understanding when players acknowledge their mistakes.
The controversy arose during a television interview in Uruguay in June, where Bentancur was asked for a Spurs player’s shirt. He responded, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.” Following the incident, South Korea captain Son accepted Bentancur’s apology on social media, stating that they remain “brothers.”
Despite this, the English Football Association charged Bentancur with an aggravated breach of its rules, resulting in him missing six Premier League matches and a League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United unless the appeal is successful.
Postecoglou acknowledged Bentancur's mistake but argued that the initial ban was excessive. “We believe the first one (ban) was harsh and we’ve appealed that, which I think is our right. That’s the whole process,” he stated.
The manager criticized the tendency to quickly condemn players, sharing his belief that education should play a more significant role in addressing such incidents. “I get that people want to burn people at the stake these days, but as I keep saying, part of this process, if you want a real sort of education, is to understand,” he remarked.
Postecoglou also reflected on his own experiences, suggesting that learning from mistakes is essential for personal growth. “I’ve made bigger mistakes than that mate, but I was allowed to learn from it. Hopefully I’m a better human being because of that,” he added.
Bentancur's suspension compounds Postecoglou's challenges ahead of a difficult match against reigning champions Manchester City, with both first-choice center-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven also sidelined due to injury, along with forwards Timo Werner and Richarlison.
