Van Gaal guides Bayern Munich back to the top - the 2009/10 Bundesliga

After Jurgen Klinsmann's disappointing tenure, Bayern Munich appointed Louis van Gaal as head coach for the 2009-10 season, and he led the team to the Bundesliga title, finishing five points ahead of Schalke. Wolfsburg, the previous title holders, struggled and finished eighth after sacking their new boss Armin Veh during the season. Jurgen Klopp guided Borussia Dortmund to a fifth-place finish, earning them qualification for the Europa League. Hertha Berlin had a poor season, winning only five games, just a season after finishing fourth. They were relegated along with Bochum, while Nurnberg managed to stay up through a playoff. In the summer, several clubs made coaching changes, with Van Gaal replacing caretaker Jupp Heynckes at Bayern Munich. Heynckes moved to Bayer Leverkusen, while Felix Magath left Wolfsburg for Schalke. Additionally, there were significant player transfers, with Bayern Munich making wise investments that contributed to their title win. Van Gaal became the first Dutch coach to win the Bundesliga, thanks to outstanding performances from players like Franck Ribery and new signing Arjen Robben. Schalke also performed well under Magath, with Kevin Kuranyi leading the attack. Leverkusen's Stefan Kiessling and young midfielder Toni Kroos also had standout seasons. Arjen Robben was named Bundesliga Player of the Year, while Edin Dzeko finished as the league's top scorer. The team of the season included notable players such as Neuer, Lahm, and Schweinsteiger. Mario Gomez's transfer to Bayern Munich for €30m was the most expensive of the season. The key moment of the season was Bayern Munich reclaiming the top spot in the table after back-to-back defeats, with a crucial win over Schalke.
