Montpellier stun French football to claim maiden title - Ligue 1 in 2011/12

In the 2011-12 season, French football promised excitement with Lyon, Marseille, and Lille expected to perform well. Additionally, PSG underwent new ownership with plans to invest heavily in winning the Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League titles. However, the unexpected happened as Montpellier, considered underdogs, clinched the Ligue 1 title with a young, vibrant team. The season saw significant changes, with PSG making marquee signings like Javier Pastore, while Lille saw key players leave. Montpellier's strong start and consistent performance led them to the top of the table, ultimately winning the title in dramatic fashion. Eden Hazard was the standout player, Rene Girard was honored as the manager of the season, Younes Belhanda shone as the young player of the season, and Olivier Giroud finished as the top goalscorer. The most expensive transfer was Javier Pastore's move to PSG for €42 million. The key moment of the season was Montpellier's 1-0 victory over Lille, which put them on the brink of the title in the final minutes of the game.
